Australia Day Achievement Award for Outgoing sub-Branch President
Sussex inlet sub-Branch President Neil Barrett was presented with a National Australia Day Achievement Award by the Hon. Fiona Phillips MP at a ceremony on 2 March 2025.
Neil was recognised for his exemplary commitment to ex-service veterans, their families, and the local community on behalf of the RSL of Australia (NSW), through service excellence over 10 years as President and Welfare Officer of the Sussex Inlet RSL sub-Branch, and in the establishment of the 238 Army Cadet Unit. Neil’s nomination was made by the sub-Branch through RSL NSW to the RSL of Australia for consideration by the National Australia Day Council.
Neil has proudly served the Sussex Inlet community since retiring to the area. Amongst his many hats, Neil was a member of the sub-Branch for 15 years, 14 proud years as sub-Branch Welfare Officer, and for the past 9 years as sub-Branch President. Neil officially stood down as President and Welfare Officer in March 2025.
Along with his official roles of attending funerals to honour veterans and attending key meetings within the RSL organisation as Welfare Officer, Neil not only assisted veterans and families in times of need. His regular monthly ‘Newspaper Run’ helped him connect and keep in touch with veterans unable to attend the sub-Branch in person. Neil’s ‘Uber Eats’ inspired meal runs following sub-Branch functions also saw him proudly deliver meals to veterans unable to attend. Neil’s commitment to assisting our veterans and the community during emergencies is also acknowledged. Neil has been a stalwart in the community.
Sub-Branch and local community members had the privilege and honour of congratulating Neil at the presentation ceremony before farewelling him on his journey. Neil’s presence in the Sussex Inlet community will be missed as he ventures north to be closer to family. Congratulations on your award and we wish you well in your future life.
